Dr Sarah McNamara is a Senior Clinical Psychologist and has 22 years of experience providing psychological services to clients within primary care and specialist care settings as a private clinical psychologist, within GP practices, the CRC, and currently for the HSE. Sarah graduated with a 1st class Honours Degree in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin. Following a year working for the Prince’s Trust, she went on to complete a PhD in mental health in young people with the University of Oxford and further doctoral training as a clinical psychologist through the Psychological Society of Ireland (University of Ulster). She has a wide range of experience working with adults, young people and children, and has worked within many clinical environments including St. James’s Hospital, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and Stewarts Care.
Sarah is highly experienced in delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness therapies. She has a special interest in Solution Focused Brief Therapy within an integrated therapy model. She trained in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in St. James’s Hospital during which time she co-delivered depression relapse prevention and stress reduction groups. Sarah has worked as a Stress and Anxiety Counsellor as part of multi-disciplinary team in a GP practice and has provided individual psychological input to many GP referred clients on a wide range of emotional difficulties, specialising in stress and anxiety.
Having worked and studied in the UK, France, US and Australia, Sarah returned home and has worked and lived in Ireland since 2001. She enjoys traveling and has traveled extensively around Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and Central America. She is committed to lifelong learning. She enjoys yoga, tennis, reading, cooking, music and films.
She is married with four children.
During her time at the Institute of Public Administration, Sarah provided group training sessions to hundreds of clients in middle to senior management positions. She designed, delivered and evaluated programmes in stress management, communication skills, interview skills, presentation skills, conflict management, managing and developing people, and customer service.
She also provided one-to- one executive coaching services within the IPA and for the management team at the 5-Star Merrion Hotel, Dublin.
Sarah has worked as a research consultant for Oxford University, Children’s Research Centre, Trinity College Dublin, National Children’s Trust, The Prince’s Trust, Department of Education and Department of Justice.
She has facilitated research (UCD) during her work as a clinical psychologist. She has worked as a psychology lecturer and tutor for University of Oxford, Stanford University, City University of New York and for medical students at Trinity College Dublin.
Sarah’s awards include the Robert Gardiner Scholarship for research at Cambridge University, the Economic and Social Research Council Ph.D. studentship at Oxford University. The Prendergast Scholarship for research at Oxford University and the Marie Curie Fellowship (a 2 year European Union fellowship) for research at Oxford University.
